Three strategies for Financial Management and Christian Marriages
You have likely heard that one of the chief if not the main cause of problems in Christian marriages has to do with finances. At no time is this truer than today during an economic crisis. People are losing jobs and even losing their homes.
All the more reason it is essential that Christian couples get a handle on their financial lives as quickly as possible. In this article are three strategies that Christian husbands and wives can use to reduce the amount of stresses on their marriage that come from financial issues.
One, the couple must get a handle on where the money is going. Too often the husband and wife separately write checks or make charges to their credit cards and neither of them really knows how much money they’ve spent and where the money has gone. It doesn’t take long for this to lead to financial disaster.
The advice that many couples receive who struggle with this problem is to get rid of their credit cards and hide their checks, using only cash for their purchases. This way, a couple only has to look in their pocket to see how much money they have – or maybe don’t have.
Two, the couple should talk together about their financial goals and then develop a budget that will help them achieve those goals. One goal that couples should have is to save up enough money for any emergency that might come along.
If one of them was out of work for a period of time, they would need sufficient savings to see them through that lean period. Some people see a budget as being too restrictive, but looked at another way, it is actually very freeing. Having a budget keeps people from making impulsive purchases that they later regret. It serves to help the couple to focus and direct their earnings toward their shared goals.
Three, a couple should only use credit cards for convenience and if they are able to pay off the balance at the end of the month. So a couple must have both the capability and the discipline to pay all credit card charges each and every month. The interest rates on credit cards and late fees are a enormous and have sunk many couples financially.
Financial problems are a reality of life and cannot always be avoided. As mentioned, they can create a great deal of stress and pressure on Christian marriages even to the extent of requiring a professional Christian counselor to intervene and help the couple work through their problems. In recent years, there has even arisen Christian financial counseling services. At a church, you may find free Christian counseling services.
