The first step is to make sure that you actually have bad credit.  This might seem a little obvious, but there’s a large percentage of people who have errors on their credit report that are negatively affecting their score.  Get a copy of your credit report and go over it with a fine tooth comb.  If you come across an error, clear it up with whoever put it there, then forward all of that information on to the three credit reporting bureaus.  It’s possible to make a huge improvement in your score in just a few weeks.

Another way to help you get approved is to increase the amount of down payment you have for the loan.  Saving money for a down payment can be tough, but the more you have to put down, the less the loan relies on your credit score.  If you can increase down payment by 5 or 10% you are increasing your chances of getting approved exponentially.

Having a cosigner is a risky way to ensure that you get approved.  When someone with a great credit score helps you out you almost guarantee approval, but you risk your relationship with that person.  Should you fail to repay the loan, it becomes their responsibility and will ruin their credit score if it defaults.

Getting a car loan with bad credit isn’t impossible.  Use any of the three steps discussed above to make a huge improvement in the chances that you get approved.
