Today it is thought that women have a 75 percent chance of being successful in business. They are also thought to earn anywhere up to 75 percent below men’s earnings. In other words, women today have a swelling business and education success record, but government still perceives them as disadvantaged regardless of how much progress has been made in the past four decades.

At federal, state, and regional levels, government is proactive in providing programs through which women can start their dream businesses and can get a little financial help to do so through government grants for women. These are not necessarily women-specific grants, but women are encouraged to apply. They still face such issues and practices as gender discrimination and harassment and are seen as needing big boosts from outside no matter how much practical understanding or capital they bring forward on their own.

Many funds are available including government grants for minority women (who can suffer the problem of both gender and racial discrimination). Grants available include some five-figure grants for women entrepreneurs with disabilities; six-figure grants for scientific research or to start child-care centers and grants for women starting a business in certain towns and zip codes. The question becomes where women can find those grants to begin with.

That takes serious hunting even if the 2009 economic stimulus package included funding for hundreds of government grants for women. However, it is easier now than four decades ago to make the hunt. You can begin with a visit online to many information websites for a good start on learning about federal grant packages. It is also a good idea to look locally first. The local public library has lots of information about local or regional grants targeted to women or for which women are encouraged actively to apply. So does the regional college library. However, do not ignore the penalties that could apply if your project accounting reports are incomplete or your designated project is not completed within the agreed-upon schedule. At all levels, government tends to watch very closely if you receive one of their grants.

However, if you are not an entrepreneur just yet and you want to continue or expand your education, there are government grants for women designed to help you do it. There is an estimated $86.4 billion in government grant funds set aside for students, graduates, and researchers. Other estimates say over 1,000 federal and 24,000 state grant programs were available in 2009, including to women. Whatever 2010 proves to hold for grants such as those, government grants for women are more widely available now than in past years, and with more funding.

Be sure to research both the prospective consequences and the prospective benefits of your project, educational plan, or research goals. In addition, prepare to invest a small sum of your own money just to get through the grant process.
