Student Loan Options For Students With Bad Credit

One trend I’m seeing more and more with older students, those who are already out of school and in the work force, is that many of them are trying to improve their skill sets and finding it hard to secured financial aid due to poor credit history. Finding student loans for students with bad credit is even harder these days since the financial sector bailouts. Lenders are more careful about who they loan money to. Some even take into consideration which school you’re going to!

Even though it may look bleak, there may be a silver lining. President Obama’s stimulus bills promised to increases the money going to Pell grants and eases the requirements somewhat. If you can get approved for a Pell grant, it may help you go a long ways in funding your college cost. Pell grants do not have to be repaid plus they can be used for non-tuition purposes like rent and other living expenses. This is one reason they are so sought after by a lot of middle to low class students.

Another option for students wanting to obtain a degree from a traditional college or university is to first attend a 2 year community college to get all their requirements out of the way, then finish up the core courses at their chosen college or university. This way, if you have to, you can work while attending the community college, thus reducing the amount of financial aid you’ll need. This is especially true for students who are still living at home and getting Mom and Dad to help with their expenses such as food, rent, car payments or insurance and so on.

Finally, if you’re still needing financial aid, ask the counselor at the school you want to attend. They may know of other student loan options for students with bad credit. They may even know about some hardship scholarships that will help you should you qualify!
