Don’t Just Choose the Cheapest Electricity Supplier
If you live in a state that has a deregulated electricity market, you probably have a number of electricity suppliers competing for your business. You may be wondering how to make a choice between these competing suppliers. While price is obviously an important consideration, there are reasons why you might not want to just go with the cheapest electricity supplier; we will discuss some other considerations that you may want to take into account.
First of all, it is probably useful to take account of the entirety of the costs and benefits associated with choosing a particular supplier. While one may appear to offer the cheapest electricity in terms of the lowest rates that they quote to you, it is important to find out whether this rate will vary over time. Is it different during different seasons, or at different times during the day? Does the rate increase if you use more than a certain amount of electricity per month? Is the rate fixed during the term of the contract, or is the supplier allowed to adjust the rate for any reason? How long is the term of the contract, and what sort of penalty will you need to pay if you cancel before the contract terms is up? Finally, some suppliers may offer incentives for signing up for their service, or for referring others to sign up, so you may want to take these benefits into account when calculating the overall cost of going with a particular supplier.
You may also have considerations that are not related to price at all. For example, you may be interested in the sources that a supplier uses to generate electricity, and whether they offer any options to get electricity from renewable sources. You may also be interested in reviews of their customer service, the reliability of their electricity, and how well they respond to reports of problems by customers. Finally, you may be interested in investigating the financial state of the electricity supplier, because it could be a major inconvenience to have your electricity interrupted because your supplier goes out of business.
With all of these considerations in mind, you can prepare yourself to make an informed choice between electricity suppliers.
